Teeth whitening at Market Place Dentistry

Do you teeth look yellow or discoloured?
Are your planning for a wedding, holiday or other event?
Do you want a simple, effective solution?

The great news is that we can help – whitening may be for you

Teeth whitening is a simple, safe and effective way to improve your smile

Teeth whitening will reliably improve the colour of your teeth. This means you can smile confidently, and makes whitening a perfect solution before weddings, holidays or any other time you want to make a good impression.

The colour is controllable and predictable

You will whiten your teeth gradually at home over several days, which means that you have full control over the final colour. Once you reach a lightness you are happy with, you can stop. This may be just a subtle touch lighter, or the full Hollywood look. It’s completely up to you.

Why choose teeth whitening?

  • Lightening your smile will help you to smile fully and confidently.
  • Whitening is completely non-invasive, so your it will not weaken or damage your teeth.
  • We get predictable, reliable results.
  • You choose the final colour – simply stop whitening when you’re happy.

What is the process?

Before we start with whitening, we will discuss your reasons for considering whitening so we can help you achieve your desired result.

We will take impressions of your teeth so a skilled dental technician can custom make some whitening trays (thin soft plastic shields which fit over your teeth).

We will check your whitening trays fit well, and go through instructions and a demonstration of how to apply the whitening gel into the trays and onto your teeth.

You will take your trays and gel with you and whiten your teeth gently at home over the course of a week or two.

Finally, we will review your treatment to ensure you have had a good result, and that you are happy with the new colour of your teeth.

It may be that you have some white fillings, crowns or veneers which will not have changed colour with the whitening. We may need to change these to match your new colour (and we will tell you before you start treatment of any fillings, crowns or veneers which may need changing)

FAQs

How long does it last?

Around 2 years. After this, the colour starts to fade back towards the original. However, if you keep your custom-made trays, you can buy more of the gel very affordably at your next visit to Market Place Dentistry.

Is it safe?

Yes (so long as you follow the instructions we give you). It’s a tried and tested method, with a long track record.

Teeth whitening is the safest form of aesthetic dentistry. This is because it is completely non-invasive; no drills are used as with some other treatments.

The whitening gel we use is safe. Some people may experience temporary teeth sensitivity but this is usually easily managed with sensitive toothpaste.

Excessive use of the gel can cause gum irritation if instructions are not followed.

There is no lasting damage to the teeth. Following whitening, your teeth will be just as strong as beforehand.

Will my crowns and fillings whiten?

No.

The whitening will only affect natural enamel and dentine.

However, if you have existing crowns or fillings, we can usually change these for lighter ones to match your new lighter shade afterwards.

Before you start whitening, your dentist will identify any visible restorations (crowns, veneers, fillings) which may need to be changed after the whitening treatment. We will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Can I whiten my one dead, discoloured tooth?

Yes.

This uses a slightly different technique where whitening gel is sealed inside the tooth for 2 weeks. It is usually reliable and predictable, but may need to be repeated periodically.

Should I consider beauty salon/internet whitening?

No.

With these options, there is no guarantee of safety as your treatment will not be supervised by a registered dentist. The supplier of whitening gel would be unregulated so this may be at best ineffective or at worst dangerous.

This practice is illegal for non-dentists and the General Dental Council are trying to protect patients by putting a stop to non-dentists offering this treatment.
